Start the Morning with Protein
You might have heard the saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s completely true. Do not skip it. Skipping meals can result in an insulin surge when you eat later in the day, contributing to an imbalance in hormones. The challenge in the morning is that most breakfast foods are loaded with carbs – exactly what you don’t need in the morning. Bagels, pastries, even cereal are often dense carbs and simple sugars that further spike insulin and send you crashing a short time later. This affects your energy level and shows in your skin. There is a very simple and delicious solution!
In previous posts we’ve discussed the benefit of starting your day with protein. There are numerous ways to achieve this that also save time and take the guesswork out of a healthy start to the day. Yogurt is a great option – with protein as a wonderful early energy source for the day. Other benefits of yogurt include Vitamin D & Calcium as well as probiotics that help with digestion. The key is to avoid brands high in sugar. This is easily accomplished by opting for plain yogurt and adding in healthy additions, such as fruits and seeds. The plain varieties come in a larger size that you can pre-blend with a touch of vanilla extract and sweetener, having it ready to go each morning. Simply sprinkle fresh blueberries, a tablespoon of flax seed or chia seeds, or stir in natural peanut butter, and you are off to an amazing start to your day!
Don't Forget Your Lips
Vanity is not always a negative. That which makes us naturally beautiful is almost always good for our health. Interestingly, but not surprisingly, physical beauty attributes are often associated with fertility and hormonal balance, such as clear skin, a narrow waistline, and healthy hair. Our skin is at its peak during the peak estrogen phase of the cycle – giving us a glow around the time of ovulation. Like all valuable and beautiful gardens we need to ensure that we cultivate and protect our bodies from our environment. Therefore you need to be an attentive gardener and make sure that you are getting the right nutrients to nourish your body. Your Venus Effect Shopping List:
Core four daily intake:
- Multivitamin - Keep in mind that some multivitamins contain some calcium and vitamin D. We recommend you take this with a meal.Calcium: 1,000 mg minimum and 1,500 mg after menopause or 1,200mg if on hormone therapy. Make sure to take these in divided doses with no more than 500 to 600 mg at one time. Note: it is best to get your calcium intake from the foods in your diet. Foods rich in calcium include yogurt, milk or soymilk, tofu, salmon, and dark leafy greens such as kale.
- Vitamin D: 1,000 IU or 1,200 IU for menopausal women
- Omega 3 Fatty Acids: 210 to 270 mg EPA, 130 to 175 mg DHA - Take twice per day with meals.
More to enjoy:
- Dark Chocolate: 1 ounce per day. Dark Chocolate has many health benefits including that it is rich in antioxidants, pro-circulation, and natural antidepressant. Go for a 70% cocoa variety to avoid the sugar that is a Venus interrupter.
- Cinnamon: ½ teaspoon to help ramp of your metabolism. Enjoy sprinkles into your yogurt or coffee in the morning.
If you drink alcohol:
- Remember, moderation is best. No more than one alcoholic beverage in a day, and preferably only 2-3 days of the week. Red wine is a great choice as it is rich in polyphenols--natural antioxidants that are good for heart health and are also phytoestrogens.
